Where has the year gone?

We're the full contingent again and it is lovely to have
everyone back home. Lila and Seb saw some big game close up
while in Africa and Peter managed to get in a quick paddle while
in Seychelles. While I had a bit of extra time, I put my
hand up for the News Editor's job at the Home Education
Association. So instead of writing a newsletter
once a month, an additional weekly deadline looms!
Kids Around the World
The wonderful Kids Around
the World series provides information about, customs, cultures
and celebrations around the world. It includes hands-on
activities and links in well with studies of society and the
environment. With
Kids Around the World Celebrate!
you don't have to stick to only one culture's celebrations.
The subtitle, "the best feasts and festivals from many lands"
hints at the wealth of information inside.
Other books in this series available from our website: Kids
Around the World Create! &

Clear, easy-to-follow instructions with directions and
illustrations deal with well-known and lesser known celebrations
from countries including India, Japan, Ecuador, Scotland,
Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Barbados. Make Chinese
dumplings, Saudi-Arabian date and nut treats, celebrate a
Nigerian festival on the drum you've made or make an exquisite
Venetian mask for the Carnival. Helpful lists and hints make
this a very handy resource. |

New Additions to the Site
First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind
has always been very popular with home educators and many follow
this program. The publishers have now split the combined volume
for Levels 1 & 2 into a volume per level.
At a hundred lessons per book these provide a
thorough year's grammar work in each volume.
We have the Level 1 book in stock already and
Level 2 should arrive within the next few weeks as it will be
published this month.

Old Favorite Back in Stock
It's True! Burke & Wills Forgot the Frying Pan
is once again available as a reprint. Author David Greagg
provides an entertaining guide to a whole string of Austalian
explorers in these amusing history stories.
Bass and
Flinders; Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson; Oxley; Hume and
Hovell; Hume and Sturt; Mitchell; Strzelecki; Leichhardt; Burke
and Wills; and, finally, Stuart - yes, their stories are all
here. With a handy timeline, useful website links and tips for
doing your own exploring, this is really an all-in-one
information pack for those interested in exploration and the men
who braved the unknown (to Europeans, at least!) Australian
expanses.
A great way for primary students to learn all
they need to know about Australian exploration.

Websites
of the Month
This month I feel the urge to share two
websites, although the one is more about the accompanying movie
than the website itself. I shared this in the HEA
newsletter too and it has appeared on some other forums by now. For those who might feel cheated by a movie
link, it is followed below by the proper website of the month.
If you have not seen the British documentary
"We are the people we've been waiting for" don't miss the
opportunity to see it for free on iView at this link:
http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/program/646015. This
documentary will make your heart sink and soar as it highlights
what is wrong with school education and dreams about what can
be. If you're reading this newsletter you've probably figured
out for yourself that there has to be a better way forward, but
make a date and watch this!
Thinkfinity provides
thousands of free lesson plans and other resources for K-12.
There is an awful lot to explore at this website, but start by
having a look
here. You can just
pick a keyword or refine your search by choosing audio, video,
lesson plans, worksheets, primary resources and/or interactives,
then specify the grade level and subject area... you get the
idea! A site to go to when you already know what you want to
teach but just want to find materials on that topic. If you go
in there without a specific quest you might just never come out
again!
Please provide adequate supervision for
children using the internet.
