Insect Detective
An exquisite glimpse into the strange and
wonderful world of insects.
My (Elsa's) big brother is an
entomologist and when I think back to our childhood I remember
him observing creepy crawlies, his mischievous blue eyes
twinkling even more than usual. He never lost his interest in
insects and must be one of very few adults who followed their
dream 100%. He still has the same enthusiasm about his work as
during those first observations (and his eyes still twinkle!).
If even one other little boy can become and remain as
enthusiastic about insects, Insect Detective deserves a special place
in our catalogue.
Although we're still awaiting our first
copy and have not done a proper review on this one yet, I was
sold on the cover alone! What sealed the deal for me was looking
inside (see Look Inside link below cover picture)
and then reading the publisher's blurb. So we've made an
exception and already included it here.

Marcia Williams
Marcia Williams has illustrated and retold
many literary classics for children with her distinctive
cartoon-strip style. Among her highly acclaimed titles are The Iliad and the Odyssey,
Mr William Shakespeare’s Plays and
Bravo, Mr William Shakespeare.
Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is a selection
of well-loved tales from the classic literary masterpiece retold
in humorous comic-strip style.
Instantly accessible to a young audience, this
informative and light-hearted introduction to Chaucer retains
the unique flavour of Chaucerian language.
Travel back to Medieval England and join
Chaucer and his band of Canterbury pilgrims. Nine well-loved
tales, from a host of colourful characters - the Knight, the
Miller, the Reeve, the Wife of Bath, the Summoner, the Clerk,
the Franklin, the Pardoner and the Nun’s Priest - are brought to
life through Williams' trademark witty, comic-strip art.

That Time of the Year!
Well, if we don't start telling you about our
Christmas titles now, they'll have to wait
till next year this time. So here goes...
A very classy book that will be as popular with the adults as
with children, is
A Bush Christmas, C J Dennis' poetic
evocation of a hot Australian Christmas, with beautiful
illustrations by Dee Huxley.

The sun burns hotly
thro’ the gums As
down the road old Rogan comes –
The hatter from the lonely hut
Beside the track to Woollybutt.
He likes to spend his
Christmas with us here.
He says a man gets sort of strange
Living alone without a
change Gets sort
of settled in his way;
And so he comes each Christmas day
To share a bite of
tucker and a beer.
It’s Christmas in the
bush and there’s not a sign of snow in sight. The kitchen has
heated up nicely with enough roasted turkey and plum pudding to
help diners burst at the seams.

We also have several high quality Christmas activity books to
satisfy young art and crafts practitioners.
50 Christmas things to make and do is ideal
for children who love making and doing, this handsome,
spiral-bound book is brimming with Christmas art ideas.

 |
Each activity comes with easy-to-follow instructions and
beautiful full colour illustrations. Older children will be able
to make and do on their own. Younger ones may need a little help
from an older sibling or mum/dad. Children will have loads of
fun making all of these treasures and will be busy for hours!
How to draw Christmas will
also give you a good start on the
season and the creations inspired by these two books could serve
as beautiful Christmas cards or presents.

Music
Just perfect for Music Appreciation
sessions is Britten's
The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and Variations
on a Theme of Frank Bridge (English Chamber
Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra with conductor Steuart
Bedford).
Lullaby Piano offers more classical music,
this time as simple as can be. It is the very simplicity which
makes this so special. Lori Henriques is a pianist and a mother,
and these worlds were bound to overlap at some point. She
compromised by switching to those classics that could serve as
lullabies as her house was small and her piano large. Here
at Leatherwood Books we no longer have any tiny ones around, but
this lovely CD with its beautifully soothing music can be played
while doing bookwork, in Music Appreciation classes or when
winding down. It also works a treat to put tired adults to
sleep!

Website
of the Month
To find out how to do just about anything,
have a look at
Instructables (we've pointed this link to
Science, but check out the other options) or
Wonder
How To (in this case we've pointed it to arts and
crafts). Some people post strange contributions and,
as with anything on the internet, we recommend parental
supervision.
Christmas Deliveries
To guarantee delivery of books we might not
have in stock, try to place all Christmas orders by end of
November. Of course we have lots of items in stock and can
supply last minute gifts. We wrap all gifts beautifully and can
add a gift card with your message - all this is included in the
price of the books. Now where can you find a better deal?
Contact
us
A favourite job in the Leatherwood Books
office is to trace books for clients. So please
let us know if you're looking for a book or audio book and we'll
do our best to find it for you.
Happy reading!
