Where in the world... ?

May/June 2011

I was hoping that you won't notice that this month's  newsletter is just a little later than usual... of course I should not have said anything then!

Leatherwood Books has been humming along. We find that requests for specific titles increase as people get a bit pickier about what they buy. We don't mind looking for hard-to-find books, so just ask.

In a moment of madness I've taken on a tutoring job with Open Universities Australia (for one study period of three months). Instead of just two children, I now have about a hundred, including those from the Learning Hub!

The Learning Hub is in full swing for Term 2 and we've had to turn people away as we simply cannot accommodate more students in most classes. The house is bulging with teens on Tuesdays and Fridays. We also have some online students joining us in two of my classes. Who knows, we might start some classes just for online students... but let me not add to the already ridiculous workload!

Jacaranda Junior Atlas

Geography

A few weekends ago we spent a lot of time in educational bookshops looking at Geography resources. As with most such reconnaissance trips, we came home with several books and even more ideas for books to source and add to the site.

We were quite impressed by the Jacaranda Junior Atlas (primary school level, 128pp) and by the Longman Atlas (200pp, for older students). Both provide excellent quality and value for money. The Longman Atlas has a companion website offering activities and more useful bits and pieces. Note that we won't keep a large stock of these titles, but can supply them within a couple of weeks on order.

For those aged 12+ who want to learn some map interpretation skills, the Heinemann Atlas Workbook (108pp) gives a good workout. We have some of those in stock. We can also get hold of the Heinemann Atlas, if you are interested. It is a good one, but costs a bit more than the Longman Atlas we mention above.

Even more advanced is Planet Earth: Environment and People (208pp), a Yr 11/12 level textbook (written for WA students, but most certainly not focusing on WA). Topics covered in detail are geomorphic studies, atmosphere studies, world biomes, population issues and  renewable/non-renewable resources. 208pp

We're still hunting for a good book to hone map reading skills at a junior level.  Would love to hear what works for you...

Website of the Month

Look at the delightful Made by Joel website of Joel Henriques showcasing his art and craft, but also his joie de vivre!  Visit  http://madebyjoel.com/  whenever you are feeling flat and sans inspiration.

Joel is an artist and parent who dares to dream with his children. I adore the simple but beatifully elegant crafts shared by this artist and his down-to-earth way of making the world a better place.

We first encountered Joel's work on the CD cover of his equally talented sister, singer-composer-pianist Lori Henriques. Her CD Lullaby Piano is a favourite in our house, despite a dearth of babies!  Lori has just released a new CD and we'll share that with you in a few months.

Please supervise children when they use the internet.

Looking for Pen Pals?

Homeschooled pen pals (or others keen to corespond with homeschoolers) required. Let me know if you're interested.

We're happy to find that book

Just ask for an obligation-free quote and we'll see if we can find any book you're looking for (not just children's books).

You've all been fairly quiet lately...  was it something we said?

Please note that the next newsletter will also be a combined issue for two months (July/August). We hope to return to the normal newsletter frequency in September.
