Learning and doing interesting things

March 2011

It has been quite a start to the year and clearly some of us have taken on too much! What keeps me going is that Lila is 14 and our homeschooling time is running out. In a few years we'll look back on this and wish we still had rooms filled with noisy teenagers learning and doing interesting things.  Good to keep matters in perspective!

DK Eyewitness Project Books

Probably the best value in the business, these 46-page sturdy paperback project books, complete with progress star charts, quizzes, beautiful stickers, fold-out reference charts, certificates of achievement and strings of activities will provide more than enough for a study unit on any of the topics covered.

We have the following titles in stock and can get hold of others in the series: Earth, Medieval Life, Prehistoric Life and Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece.  See inside some of them by clicking on the links, then on "see inside this book".  Suitable for ages 8+.

The Eagle of the Ninth New additions to the site

The Eagle of the Ninth made it onto our site through several recommendations. Another excellent book by the masterful Rosemary Sutcliff of Black Ships before Troy fame, The Eagle of the Ninth tells the story of the missing Ninth legion of the Roman Army that marched off to deal with the Caledonian uprising.

Linking historical facts and a fictional account of what might have happened to the legion, Sutcliff tells a captivating story that should intrigue young readers and their curious parents.

Suitable ages 9+.

Australian audio books

Pirate, the barking Kookaburra and Lancelot, the one-armed kangaroo are Australian audio books by Adrian Plitzco.  Excellent voice artists bring the stories to life and your little ones will love the well-drawn characters and original music.

Website of the Month

The Children's Butterfly Site will engage young students. This comprehensive site offers photographs, the all-important life cycle details one would expect from a site on butterflies and the added bonus of teaching and learning pages. The lesson plan for use with The Very Hungry Caterpillar comes complete with a set of colouring pages. The site provides accessible information in the form of a mammoth FAQ, but aspiring lepidopterists can reach more substantial information by exploring the links on the list provided.
