All ready for a brilliant new adventure?

February 2011

Just a few days to go before we start our homeschool activities for the year. If all goes according to plan this will be a very different year to the last one.  I expand on this in the About Us section at the bottom of this newsletter.

New additions to the site

During the holidays Peter added several books to the site and I'll mention a few here.

Fly a Rebel Flag (pictured right) has been around for a while but is an excellent account of the Eureka Stockade, so we've added it to the site. Paperback, 138 pages.

Another Australian book we've added, Explorers: Filling in the Map of Australia, tells the stories of Australia's famous early (European) explorers. Attractive, high-quality layout typical of Black Dog Books. Ages 7 - 12. Paperback, 30 pages.

Science Month by Month provides more than 80 activities for ages 9-15. The book will work well for homeschoolers, even for those without special science equipment. You'll have to switch lessons around to fit in with our seasons, as it is an American book. Paperback, 350 pages.

Discounted books we no longer plan to stock

Fly a rebel flag
We have such a big range of books, but still find we add books on a weekly basis. The only way to keep doing this is to let some titles go. It is very hard to decide which books we no longer plan to stock and sometimes the criteria is simply that we already have too many books in that category.

Have a look at our Discounted Titles section to see some of these books and other discounted items. Note that, except for the book bundles, we usually have only ONE copy each of the books in that category.

Website of the Month

Mini Eco has to be one of the most beautiful children's craft websites available. Despite the gorgeous pictures, the crafts are mostly surprisingly simple to make. (I concede that not many of us have time to make "knitted anklebells").  Enjoy!  http://www.minieco.co.uk/minieco-tutorials/

 COMPETITION

There is a competition on at Free Range eMag -  the free emag for homeschoolers aged 10-17. Send in a short paragraph explaining what you like most about homeschooling and why, to be in the running to a book donated by us. The competition is open to new and existing subscribers. See full details on the site: www.freerangemag.com

Supervision is the best way to prevent your child from encountering unsuitable internet content. Websites change and what seems to be a suitable link today might be something different tomorrow.

About Us

This year Seb will no longer be homeschooled, officially that is, and starts a new phase in his education, starting with a unit through Open Uni and, in the second semester, doing the Cert IV he's had his eye on. He'll still be joining in with homeschool activities such as surfing, computer club and perhaps a few classes.

Lila's year will also be very different. She needs a lot of social contact and we were looking for subjects for her to do as she's too young to start on Yr 11 subjects through any of the online colleges. The solution we came up with (and we hope it is a solution!) was to start a Learning Hub for 13-17 year olds here at home. When we first put the idea out there at the end of last year, we were pleasantly surprised by the positive reaction.

Classes start in the second week of February and, if all goes according to plan we'll go ahead with 8 subjects and with 19 students enrolled in classes! Have a look at the website: www.hshighschool.com
