Languages and listening

April 2011

This newsletter started out very well until I realised it was turning into  an article about homeschooling! So that attempt is now saved under "work in progress" in the planning folder for the future issues of Stepping Stones!

Usborne Internet-Linked Languages

This series is inspiring and really useful to those learning a new language. Even the internet-linked books (without audio CD and other paraphernalia) provide a perfectly adequate language course from ages 8 to 16. If you are unsure about teaching the language in question, there is the option of getting the full pack with CD, dictionary and flash cards.

I would suggest spending two lessons on each double page (16 of them), so it could well be enough for a year of LOTE. In my experience the best way to ensure retention, is to go slowly and repeat new vocabulary and grammar till it becomes second nature. Rushing through simply wastes everyone's time.

If we don't have a book for the language you want to learn on our site, just ask and I can track it down for you. Titles available in this series: Latin, French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Website of the Month

Prepare to spend some time playing when checking whether this site is suitable for your children! The Smithsonian National Museum of American History's website Invention at Play can be addictive but provides the opportunity to invent fascinating solutions to the problems presented. The plan was simply to check it and I ended up having to complete a path for a ball to follow, again and again! Those who get a bit antsy in a standard classroom-style environment would probably appreciate this kind of break, labeled "serious learning" in my book. One of the games "Word Play" is supposed to be a social collaboration. It did not work for me as I did not want to enter my email. I would suggest you just tell your child to skip that one. The other three will keep them busy enough!

Please supervise children when they use the internet.

Looking for Pen Pals?

I've been putting together a list of homeschooled pen pals (or those who are keen to corespond with homeschoolers) and we would love to add to this. Any teens who would like to correspond? The younger children seem to be quite eager (or perhaps the parents are eager!) whereas the teens who have asked for pen pals are struggling to find matches. Let me know if you're interested.

Can't find something?

Just ask for an obligation-free quote and we'll see if we can find any book you're looking for (not just children's books).
