Autumn Reads

 2 April 2010

Here on our side we're feeling the bite of winter already. It's getting dark earlier and just a bit harder to get up in the mornings.

Winter is often welcomed by bookworms, as it allows us plenty of time to catch up on reading. Not everybody shares the bookworm's enthusiasm for the colder weather though.

A volume that could keep anyone busy throughout winter and beyond, is The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia.

A great resource, recommended by Susan Wise Bauer in The Well-Trained Mind, it works beautifully with The Story of the World or any other history syllabus.

This hefty volume is set out in time periods and illustrated with photos, illustrations and maps. Just right for supplementing your history studies.

Music

This month we're also looking at music as a subject. It is easy to integrate music studies with LOTE or social/geography studies. For that, look no further than the world music available from our site.

The titles below are for adding an extra dimension to your music and music appreciation studies.

Note that we can get hold of other books for you, so just ask if there is a gap in your studies that you want to fill.

Just click on the pictures to find out more about these titles.
Eyewitness Guide: Great Musicians      Classical Music Companion      Great Composers Colouring Book
Famous Composers Audio Book          The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra
Colouring Books

The colouring books have been very popular, so here are a few more titles we've added to the site. Find them in the Activity Books section or under the relevant topic heading.

Website of the Month

Supplement your upper primary and middle grades math curriculum with interesting online games from Calculation Nation, the website of the US National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Of course, as always, we recommend that parents check content before leaving their children to navigate a website. It is also a good policy to keep internet-linked computers used by children in a shared area.

About Us

Elsa's turn this month, so here goes:

I am not sure how much you’d like to know as even the abridged version is rather a long story. A list of some of the jobs I’ve had over the years might be a good shortcut, so here goes: high school language teacher, Hansard reporter, tour guide, editor, translator, web designer, writer, freelance journalist and, now, bookseller. Even though a few of these might seem a bit left of centre, they all involve lots of communication.

I’ve always been interested in education and the role motivation plays in learning. In particular, I feel that teenagers have been marginalised, not only when it comes to formal education, but also in society at large. All that enthusiasm and creativity often get suppressed or channelled in the wrong direction. For now, I’ll spare you my theories about education and why a lot of what is available is not working. :-)

I have had to scale down on freelance work over the past few years due to health issues, but at the beginning of last year felt ready to take on something completely new and exciting. When Aly sent the newsletter saying she could no longer run Leatherwood Books, Peter and I made the suggestion to buy it from her although she had not thought of selling. What a good move that proved to be, as LWB fits perfectly with our life choices. It is a family-run business and very much a team effort.

Since March 2009 we’ve been adding lots of classical homeschool resources, audio books, colouring books and other wonderful items, many on request from our customers. Looking for the right titles to add and finding specific titles on request are my favourite jobs (almost up there with unpacking the new arrivals!). I have also taken to reading a lot of young adult literature in an attempt to find titles that meet our high standards. There are many terrible books out there masquerading as YA fiction... finding jewels among them is most rewarding!

Leatherwood Books is an absolute pleasure to run and our customers are wonderful. I love hearing about the families using our books and really enjoy helping people to find just what they want.

Between homeschooling two teens, running Leatherwood Books and day-to-day family realities, there is not much time for hobbies, but if I had all the time in the world I would be spending it readin’, paintin’, singin’ and beadin’. I’m also interested in medicinal herbs and love reading recipes... now if only I loved cooking as much as reading!

Yes, we say it every month, but please let us know if we can help to find any book or audio CD.  We can get hold of titles that are not on our site and enjoy finding books on request.

Happy reading!
